FYI: top 4 things to buy at Costco

November 19, 2010

This post is just incase you missed the Yahoo top 4 things to buy at Costco…

1 Chocolate Truffles: Costco sells authentic French chocolate truffles from Chocmod, a high-end French confectionery company. Complete with a dusting of cocoa, these truffles come but once a year and they are in stores now (and only in stores — you won’t find them online). They cost $10.89 for two two-pound boxes, compared with $29 on Amazon. That’s 240 truffles, but who’s counting?  How great would these be for a Christmas wedding favor… or check out the ideas Bobbinoggin mentioned in the comments area!

4. Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Costco’s Kirkland Signature Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil may be the best-kept secret in the store. At $9.99 for 1.5 liters, it is roughly half the cost of the well-known Bertolli brand, and yet, according to at least one independent study, it’s much better. In a recent comparison of 19 olive oils on the market, The Olive Center, a research group at the University of California-Davis, found that Kirkland Organic was one of only five in the study not mixed with cheaper refined olive oil that can spoil the taste. The other four at the top of the list were all high-end brands that cost as much as five times Costco’s. Make sure you buy the Costco version that’s labeled organic, though, as opposed to the one that’s simply called “extra virgin olive oil.” It’ll cost a little bit more, but it’s worth it.

those Truffles sound so delish. i use extra virgin olive oil every day. i’ve been wanting to try the costco brand. you have convinced me to not only try the chocolates and the oil, but to renew my membership 🙂 too bad you don’t get a free bottle of olive oil for my renewal 🙂
    blessings,
    aimee

I agree on all four items! Those are the best truffles ever and their olive oil is amazing.

We have to drive to another town about 35 minutes from us, but we do it once a month because it’s such a fun day’s treat.

More “top” items to buy at Costco:

    – diapers.
    – maple syrup (excellent excellent price)
    – vanilla beans (ditto)
    – beef tenderloin (price per pound is at least ten dollars cheaper than the local grocery store)
    – electronics including flat screen tvs, digital cameras, phones, and computers. (the return policy is excellent and the price is right!)

I could go on. It’s a super fun way for us to get out of dodge for the day and enjoy every aisle and food sample table with the family.

One thing I often do with the chocolate truffles, since you get four bags of them in one purchased box… I’ll buy some pretty Christmas design plastic wrap paper and ribbon, empty the chocolates into a clear baggie, wrap it in the holiday plastic wrap, tie with a ribbon and viola… instant gift.

2-3 truffles in a cup of hot water makes an excellent cup of hot cocoa. Stir with a peppermint stick.

Love Costco – we’re there at least once a month and it’s just the 2 of us. LOL They also sell Chevere goat cheese – the best price I’ve ever seen it. It’s $4.99 for the log – it’s my fave.

Also, the 28lb tub of Kirkland Signature laundry detergent (the dry, not the liquid). I can’t even imagine what we’d do without it. It’s top rated (I think Good Housekeeping gave it 2 thumbs up too, but my picky Mom loves it and that’s all the review I need), never clumps even though it’s in our basement and it lasts FOREVER. Seriously, I think I buy laundry detergent once a year.

Costco also has the cheapest price on milk in our area, so we try to buy it there when we can.

And ya can’t forget the huge flats of potty-paper. 😉

You get what you pay for. These are not very good at all. If you’ve had good truffles, you will find these very disappointing.
