More Pillow crafting

November 28, 2010

I’ve had so much fun making pillow covers lately that I decided to give the sweater pillow a try…. this pillow was a little gift for someone special 🙂 (My sweet niece)  It was so quick and easy to make …I can’t wait to make another!!

Here it is finished….

Here is the process….

1. Use a clean fresh sweater you no longer need or find a cute one at the thrift store, preferably one with buttons….Here is the one I picked. I liked the button detail  and thought it would be a good color for the birthday girl 🙂

2. Figure out the direction and the way you want the front of your pillow to look finished. I had an insert from another pillow that I wanted to use, so that dictated the size of the finished pillow and the direction of the buttons.

3. cut off the sleeves where they are joined….I cut the collar off, but I kind of wish I wouldn’t have…I could have used it for something else.

4. I tried the insert in the sweater to see if anything needed to be adjusted or trimmed.  I wanted to make sure the sweater would close and fit right.

5. I turned right sides together and stitched the two sides up a little.  I needed to sew the sides up a bit above the waistband…. because the waist band area fit a little tighter.

Notice how the top for the sweater arches up a little… I needed a little extra room for the puffy middle of the pillow 🙂

I unbuttoned the pillow and turned it right side out….next I stuffed it and buttoned it back together…. the beauty is you don’t have to sew a zipper in …  I was amazed how easy it is to sew on sweater material . Oh, I also zigzagged the edges to help prevent raveling and I double stitched the seams.

With the extra fabric I fashioned some mittens…. they were done in a jiffy!

All you have to do is trace your hand on a piece of paper for a template and use the sleeve of the sweater for the mitt. I kept the wrist band so it was sew easy!! 🙂

turn them right sides together and stitch them up….. and turn them out….

    Rene,
This is TOO cute! Would look great on the sofa for Christmas or Valentines!
I once had a pillow custom made for a client with one of her daughter’s favorite infant dress as the front. Wish I would’ve taken a pic back then cuz it was really cute (this was before “bloggin'” days….)

Hope your Thanksgiving break has been great!

Just came across your blog for the first time today via Pintrest. This is such a great idea. I don’t know if it is possible, but a printable would make thsi super….you know how if you like a recipe and want to try it at home you can look at the pictures online and then use the pritable link to add it to your recipe collection. Just a thought 🙂

Elizabeth that’s a great idea. I’ll try and make one up the next time. The pillow went to Florida for my niece and I think I gave the gloves to someone else. I used my hands as a templete for the gloves.
