How to clean stainless steel appliances: my favorite new method

March 21, 2011

My mom gave me this fantastic tip on cleaning my stainless steel appliances.

She uses PAM regular cooking spray! I’ve tried other stainless cleaners and besides having a really strange smell they never did the job.

They might work great for you, but for some reason they left streaky marks for me.

I was really wishing we had never purchased stainless because of this issue.

But now, seriously, I don’t dislike having stainless appliances anymore ….  they even stay cleaner looking longer. Before, they never seemed to stay looking good.

My mom and I worked together on ours the first time I tried it. We sprayed a cloth with Pam and began applying it. We worked in sections. We rubbed it over an area generously and then buffed it all off. You can tell when you are done…the cloth glides over the surface easily without any drag.  For me the only time I had streaks is when there wasn’t enough Pam applied. It was a trial and error the first time until I realized I needed more Pam and then more buffing.

What works for you and your stainless?

PS. try this at your own risk, I don’t think all stainless is created equal and I don’t want to be responsible if it doesn’t work right for your appliances 🙂 I was to the point where I was ready to try anything.

I have never tried this, but I will! I hate the streaks the other brands leave. Any tips on getting a scratch off stainless steel? Hopefully someone will know! Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the tip Rene. I agree with you that stainless cleaners leave streaks. One day I discover on the liquid gold furniture polish label that it also cleans stainless. Like you I was ready to try anything because our fridge already looked awful. It worked like a charm.

    Thanks for sharing. We are moving this week, into a new home, that has stainless steel appliances, and I was nervous about the up keep! Looks like I will be able to start off on the right foot! =}

I used olive oil on my stainless fridge and it’s like we got a new fridge. It sounds like it’s similar to using Pam. And I love the fact that I don’t have to use toxic “who-the-heck-knows-what’s-in-that-stuff” chemicals in my home. Thanks for sharing your tip.

The salesman at sears suggested using WD-40. I haven’t tried it yet.

Try good old fashion Pledge…They’ve actually developed a line for stainless steel but save your money and use regular, ordinary, plain ol’ Pledge! Works everytime.
Another good tip for the kitchen….keep your plastic wrap in the freezer….you’ll never have to wrestle with it again!

Kathy thank you for the plastic wrap tip! I have never heard of that or of using pledge for the stainless!

    I use olive oil.

Ask This Old House recommends WD-40. Specifically for stainless steel kitchen sinks.

I’ve had great success with GlassPlus (no ammonia) spray, wipe with a microfiber towel, then buff with a different microfiber towel. Works great, no streaks. I have to agree the products for SS they stink and don’t work

Thanks for the tip Lyndsay… Pledge got another vote!!
It is crazy how these other things work so much better than the ones designed to do the job!

I just used remoldded my kitchen and bought all new stainless steel appliances I was alittle worried about the up keep but I just read your sugestions on how to clean the stainless so I went and used regular wesson cooking oil and it worked awesome. Now I don’t have to buy the expensive cleaners I can just buy a big thing of cooking oil at costco for $5.00. Thanks

After reading the posts, I used Great Value Non-Stick Olive Oil cooking spay and all my streaks are gone! I had some kind of streaks all over my stainless steel frige doors. I don’t know what I wiped it with when the streaks appeared, however, I tried pledge multi-purpose, soap and water, vinegar, fantatic, etc. etc. This worked like charm and not only can I cook with it I can clean with it too!
