Do you ever come across interesting carved wooden fruit and dishes called Monkey Pod when you’re thrifting?
The last couple of years I’ve been picking up a piece here and there for $5-$10 dollars. I just found
myself really attracked to their interesting shapes and especially love the wooden fruit!!!. Seriously, for some reason I
think the grapes are so stinkin cute!!.
The whole name Monkey Pod kind of got my curiosity up and so I started digging a little to find out more about the history.
I was kind of curious. What is Monkey Pod? I found out that it’s a tree grown in tropical regions. Hawaii became famous for these souvenir carved beauties dating back to 1946. As the labor costs increased, the industry spread to the Philippines and Thailand. They now supply most of the dishes Hawaii has grown famous for. Some of my dishes say made in Hawaii and some say made in the Philippines, now I know why!
As I was writting this post I started thinking….I haven’t done a GIVE-AWAY in a really long time. If you are interested in some funky carved Monkey Pod fruit in a bowl please sign up!! I don’t know if very many people will be interested, but I thought I would go ahead with the idea anyway.
You can sign up as a google friend, twitter and facebook the give-away. Just be sure to add each thing you do as an entry on a separate comment so it counts as another possible winner spot. You can also share about it on your blog. That counts for 2 entries. Again just be sure you comment twice about it so you get credit as an entry.
The give-away will stay open until next Thursday the 10th. The winner will be picked through Random.org I’ll announce the winner On the 11th and I’ll email the one who is picked. Sorry, USA residents only. I love my readers outside the US, but it would cost me to much to ship.

I want the fruit!!! Trying so hard to fix up my lil nest after 10 yrs of handme downs want it to look like us and we love this fruit!!
I’ve seen that stuff in the thrifts but never picked it up (and no, please don’t enter me in the drawing, I’m just commenting). However, I am a sucker for beaded fruit from the 50s/60s and those resin grape clusters … my mom spent one year making those for everyone for Christmas and I still remember the smell of the resin and all the glass from her breaking the molds to release the grapes … ahhh … memories! 🙂
I follow you and man, I’d love to win some wooden fruit 🙂
Renee they are wonderful and last for ever, Make great salad bowls, after crushed garlic to season the wood they get better every time you use the bowl.

I’m commenting just to comment. 🙂 I had no idea it was called Monkey Pod but your picture certainly brought back fun memories. My Grandma had some wooden pieces like the carved bowls you had and some pineapples. Very interesting! I’m not a collector nor do I like extra “stuff” so it was fun to see your pictures and just enjoy the memories!
Those are so cute! I just became a liker on facebook when I saw this post!
The wooden fruit are *adorable*! *eeeek* How did I not know about these?
Would love to win this and display it in my living room.
Those are so neat Rene. I saw a couple of old wooden dishes the other day and was about to buy them when I noticed a chip. Maybe I will be as lucky as you one day.
I would love to have these for my home, thanks!

Rene,
You have such a great eye for what looks good – I always love pictures of your home. I had never heard of Monkey Fruit until you wrote about on your post – thanks for the information. Of course I would love the opportunity to win some of this “fun” looking fruit. I do have a question for you, where did you find / buy the great white bowl that you used for displaying the fruit in most of the pictures. I love it!
I’m a GFC follower now. I love the wooden fruit, I think my wife would get a kick out of having them in a bowl mixed with real fruit, sitting on our coffee table when people come over.
Following via GFC, thanks!
