Easy Owl Cupcakes

October 9, 2013

owl cupcakes pinable

In honor of all things owl here at Bargain Hoot I am sharing a sweet little cupcake idea. With just the simplest of ingredients you can turn an ordinary cupcake into an adorable owl-inspired treat!

Ingredients list and prices:

From Target:
Yellow boxed cupcake mix: $1.13 (Pillsbury)
Chocolate frosting: $1.60 (Pillsbury)
Chocolate sandwich cookies: $1.63 (Target)
Reese’s Pieces: $1.00 (Hershey’s)

From my pantry:
3 eggs
1/3 cup vegetable oil
Slivered Almonds

Total spent: $5.36
Total number of cupcakes made: 15 (The cake mix will make 24 if you don’t fill them as full but you will need two packages of cookies in order to have enough “eyes”.)

Directions: After baking as directed, letting the cupcakes cool and topping them with the frosting it was time for the fun to begin.

I carefully twisted chocolate sandwich cookies apart and used two of the frosted sides for eyes. (This particular package of cookies left a little chocolate residue on the white frosting but I didn’t mind.) I added a chocolate candy to the center with just a touch of frosting to hold it. I used an orange candy piece for the beak and some slivered almonds for the look of feathers.

For this one I used just two almonds for ears.

On another I used several almonds for a more feathery effect.

I also left one plain with a swirl of frosting for ears to show that they are cute without the almonds if you don’t have any available or are concerned with nut allergies.

For just slightly over $5.00 you can have a very fun, and very cute batch of your own owls to serve your family and friends. What a hoot!
