Monkey Pod: wooden fruit and dishes

March 3, 2011

Do you ever come across interesting carved wooden fruit and dishes called Monkey Pod when you’re thrifting?

The last couple of years I’ve been picking up a piece here and there for $5-$10 dollars.  I just found

myself really attracked to their interesting shapes and especially love the wooden fruit!!!.  Seriously, for some reason I

think the grapes are so stinkin cute!!.

The whole name Monkey Pod kind of got my curiosity up and so I started digging a little  to find out  more about the history.

I was kind of curious. What is Monkey Pod? I found out that it’s a tree grown in tropical regions. Hawaii became famous for these souvenir carved beauties dating back to 1946. As the labor costs increased, the industry spread to the Philippines and Thailand. They now supply most of the dishes Hawaii has grown famous for. Some of my dishes say made in Hawaii and some say made in the Philippines, now I know why!

As I was writting this post I started thinking….I haven’t done a GIVE-AWAY in a really long time. If you are interested in some funky carved Monkey Pod fruit in a bowl please sign up!!   I don’t know if very many people will be interested, but I thought I would go ahead with the idea anyway.

You can sign up as a google friend, twitter and facebook the give-away. Just be sure to add each thing you do as an entry on a separate comment so it counts as another possible winner spot. You can also share about it on your blog. That counts for 2 entries. Again just be sure you comment twice about it so you get credit as an entry.

The give-away will stay open until next Thursday the 10th. The winner will be picked through Random.org I’ll announce the winner On the 11th and I’ll email the one who is picked. Sorry, USA residents only. I love my readers outside the US, but it would cost me to much to ship.
